MIJNshop & MIJNcollectie were a shop and fashion collection inspired by the heritage of coal mining in the Netherlands. With M2015 – Jaar van de Mijnen (Year of the Mines) Heerlen celebrated this heritage with various projects, exhibitions, and events.

Heerlen is part of Parkstad Limburg (formerly known as Oostelijke Mijnstreek/Eastern Mineregion), an important centre for the coal mining industry in the Netherlands in the late 19th century. Mine workers came from all over Europe (Italy, Poland, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Morocco, Spain, Friesland) to work in the state mines, contributing to a viable, and multicultural society. The coal mines located in the South Limburg region were shut down by the Dutch government between 1965 and 1976, which had an enormous social and economical impact on the area.
